Scam Alert: Air Duct Cleaning
A low price deserves a closer look
A very low advertised price may cover only a limited service. It is not proof of a scam, but you should confirm the full scope and total cost before booking.
Compare what is included, not just the headline price. System size, access and the work requested can affect an estimate. Take time to ask questions before authorizing work.
Warning signs to watch for
• The advertised price changes sharply after arrival, without a clear explanation of the added work.
• You are pressured to approve expensive repairs or treatments immediately.
• The company will not provide a written scope, contact details or evidence for its recommendations.
• Broad promises about health benefits replace an explanation of your system’s condition.
These signs are reasons to pause and ask questions. Request photos, an itemized explanation and time to compare another estimate.
Ask about the cleaning method
Ask which ducts and HVAC components are included, how debris will be collected and how the work will be documented. The EPA advises using equipment that exhausts outdoors, or HEPA-filtered equipment when exhaust remains indoors. A portable machine alone does not prove poor workmanship.
Be cautious about unrequested chemical treatments or a mold diagnosis without supporting evidence. Ask what assessment is needed and how the underlying moisture problem will be addressed.
Before you authorize the work
Get a written estimate that lists the areas included, the total price and any exclusions. Ask how additional work will be approved. Keep the estimate, invoice and any photos, and compare recent reviews from more than one source.
